Are some credit bureaus more popular by state?

Ed F asked:

For instance I have heard TransUnion is more popular in Texas and Equifax is used more in Florida. What are the popular credit bureaus by state?

The three agencies used to have regional dominance but it is less and less that way every year. For example, Experian used to be primarily west coast, Trans Union central states and Equifax east coast but they are all nationwide now. Although they all have a different share of the market, their demographics are fairly equal these days.

Actually rate hound is correct as far as he goes but it still comes down to what your buying.

Auto finance is what I do for a living and in my field they still go by regions just as rate hound describes. Experian is used from NM West, Transunion is used from OK East to the Mississippi river and East of that Equifax is used primarily.

And then there are other lenders who will only look at whichever their personal favorite is no matter what part of the nation you live in and if it’s a mortgage you can look for all three to be pulled again no matter where you live.

And to add to rate hound and spifman…different credit cards/and their sponsored banks will pull their own “favorite” or it may depend on what state you live in and who you apply to, & is not sectioned off the way the auto loan pulls are.

And then there are the tri-merge mortgage pulls, that pull all 3 every time.
