Defaulter for Alimony can be blacklisted by Credit Bureau – 05Oct2011

SINGAPORE: Three months after the government authorised DP SME Commercial Credit Bureau to blacklist men who fail to pay alimony, the company has helped six women settle their maintenance arrears. But he only paid S each month, and eventually stopped doing so in early 2008. Madam Loh said her ex-husband was unemployed. “I didn’t call him to chase for payment. I know his character well. If I approached him for the payment, he win’t pay,” she said. “You have to get a third party in, then he’ll pay. Even when we were jointly, he rarely paid for our meals when we ate out. Each time, I was the one who paid.” After Madam Loh sought help from DP SME Commercial Credit Bureau, her ex-husband concur to pay a lump sum of S00 – out of the S00 he owed her. The bureau said this is because many Singaporeans value their credit standing. The bureau’s credit record is accessible to its 700 members, which includes licensed moneylenders, banks and retailers. DP Information Group’s senior general manager, Ong Siew Kim, said the bureau is encouraged by the results so far. Generally, it takes at least a month to work out a negotiation

80% Research Products on Web, Most use Social Media Tools for Peer Opinions before Buying

80% Research Products on Web, Most use Social Media Tools for Peer Opinions before Buying

Web Consulting, SEO and Social Media

San Antonio, Texas (PRWEB) October 30, 2011

According to a new survey, 80% of consumers always – or almost always – use the internet to research products, and most use social media tools for peer opinions before making a purchasing decision, says veteran San Antonio SEO consultant and social media coach Jon Donley.

Results of the new survey illustrate the increasing influence of the internet in the marketplace, and the growing power of search, social tools and business reviews and ratings, Donley said.

The survey, commissioned by San Antonio web design and search consulting firm Cook Profitability Services, also illustrates the fading use and influence of the telephone book as a resource for consumers.

Consumer internet research

More than 80% of survey recipients say they always or almost always research products – electronics, movies, appliances, cars, clothes, etc. – on the internet before purchase. Another 16% reported that they sometimes research products on the web. Only about 3% say they rarely, if ever, do internet research.

The majority of respondents (52%) also always or almost always research professional service providers – such as medical, dental, legal, plumbing, etc. Another 31% say they sometimes research these providers on the web. Only 17% say they seldom, if ever, do such research.

Only 10% of respondents say they always, or almost always, use the traditional telephone book for product or service research. Nearly 70% say they seldom, if ever, use the telephone book. A remaining 20% say they occasionally use the book. And less than a quarter say they use the online version of the phone directory.

Consumers use a mix of online tools as they research goods and services, but overwhelmingly, search engines are the leading tool. They survey allowed respondents to select all the tools they use. The results are as follows:

Search Engines (Google, Bing, Yahoo) – 96%

Customer reviews (Yelp, Yahoo Local, City Search, Google Places, etc.) – 63%

Company site or online store (Amazon.com, Bestbuy.com, etc.) – 53%

Social media sites (Facebook, Linkedin, Google +, Twitter, etc.) – 44%

Professional reviews (movie critics, music critics, restaurant critics, etc.) – 43%

    Online directories (yellowpages.com, etc.) – 22%

Better Business Bureau, government sites or media reports – 15%

The survey underlined the importance of social media in consumer purchasing decisions, especially the opinions of other consumers.

“This is supported by many studies,” Donley said. “Word of mouth has always been the holy grail of marketing. Now it’s been empowered by the web, and people are hungry to know what their peers think when they make decisions.”

The Facebook giant

And while Facebook – at 800 million active members – is the poster child for social, it’s only a part of the puzzle. Social media includes any internet-enabled tool that allows users to contribute or share content with others. This can range from blogs, comments, forums, photo- and video-sharing sites, email, news feeds and powerful business rating and review sites.

The CPS survey questioned its respondents about their use of some major social tools and sites. (Survey members were allowed to choose all that applied from this specific list.)

    Facebook – 86%

    You Tube – 62%

    Twitter – 44%

    Linkedin – 28%

    Forums/bulletin boards – 27%

    Blogs – 23%

    Flickr – 16%

    MySpace – 16%

    Other – 7%

    Picasa – 5%

    Digg – 4%

    Vimeo – 3%

    Reddit – 3%

    Del.icio.us – 3%

“The survey shows that connected consumers have energetically embraced the power of the internet to make informed purchasing decisions,” Donley said. “Their research almost always starts on a search engine, which in turn is a gateway into customer review and rating sites, company sites and stores, and to editorial reviews. Peer recommendations and reviews are a powerful influence, and a large majority has rejected goods or services because of them.”

For businesses trying to decide on their marketing budget allotments, he said, the survey results flag some important issues.

Nonprofit Credit Counseling Agency Publishes Free Tips to Help Consumers Prepare for Pay Cuts

Nonprofit Credit Counseling Agency Publishes Free Tips to Help Consumers Prepare for Pay Cuts

Deerfield Beach, FL (PRWEB) October 11, 2011

Debt Management Credit Counseling Corp. (http://www.dmcconline.org), a non-profit-making charitable organization (“DMCC”), has published free tips to help consumers prepare for a pay cut. Due to the recent state of our economy, many people have been confronted with an unpredictable loss of income as companies are forced to restructure their workforce and payroll. Layoffs, wage rate reductions and the elimination of overtime are all methods companies are continuing to use to balance their budgets. It is essential that consumers who face the possibility of such financial changes plan ahead, so they are prepared to deal with a lower income if it happens. To assist consumers in developing a plan, DMCC has created and published a free educational article titled How to Prepare for a Pay Cut.

Core to DMCC’s recommendations is the need for consumers to create or update their household budget to make sure that a healthy savings plan is in place. Establishing a savings plan that provides the equivalent of at least 3 to 6 months of income is essential to making sure there are enough funds to cover basic monthly expenses during a period of unemployment or reduced income. DMCC also recommends budgeting to payoff any 401(k) loans that are outstanding, which will have to be repaid immediately if employment is terminated, utilizing employee health insurance benefits to take care of any necessary checkups and medical concerns while still covered, and reviewing cell phone and other service agreements for possible cost reductions. “It is wise for consumers to start thinking about the “what if” alternatives and plan for possible unemployment, a reduction in pay, loss of overtime or a potential pay freeze,” stated Jessica Stokes, Education and Research Coordinator for DMCC. “Building sufficient savings through budgeting is the key ingredient in any plan to maintain financial stability following a reduction in income.”

DMCC offers free budget counseling sessions for anyone who is interested in getting their finances organized; even if the chance of a reduction in income or unemployment is minimal. Establishing a budget is the first and most important step when confronted with an income reduction. DMCC’s certified credit counselors will help figure out what can be done to maximize an income and put funds away for savings. DMCC can also help answer questions regarding the repayment of debts on a lower income.

About Debt Management Credit Counseling Corp.

DMCC is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) public charity committed to educating consumers on financial issues and providing personal assistance to consumers overextended with debt. Education is provided free of charge to consumers via seminars, workshops, a proprietary financial literacy program, and a vast array of online and printed materials. Free personal counseling is provided to consumers to identify the best options for the repayment of their debt. Consumers interested in speaking with a DMCC certified credit counselor may call (866) 618-3328 or request help at dmcconline.org. DMCC is a HUD Approved Housing Counseling Agency, is approved by the U.S. Trustee to provide bankruptcy counseling and education, and has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.
